A Slimline Headphone Amplifier

Another entry to the "Newer Projects" section has been posted, and this time, it's a low-profile headphone amplifier based on ESP's Project 113. Instead of Class A like my earlier headphone amp projects, I wanted to try for small and tidy. I think it came out pretty good.

Still waiting on the host to look into the problems with the site control panel, but I've switched over to using FTP and so far all is working out. I've also updated the 1970s Amp article to fix the images that got borged by the earlier uploading problems.

I ended up doing even more workshop cleaning this weekend, in addition to picking up my brother-in-law at the aiport, so there wasn't any progress on the other stuff, although I did finally buy a Variac. Only 500VA, but that was expensive enough, and I won't be using it too often even though I've been wanting one for about two years.

First 'Newer Project' now up!

The "Newer Projects" section is now active and contains its first live entry: A 1970s-styled power amplifier that I built to complement a mock-alike Bose 901 system my dad built in the mid-1970s.

It may still have some rough edges, but I've had trouble accessing my user control panel on the server all week, so up it goes in present form. It may see further, minor revisions later on if the mood strikes me.

Not dead, just busy

Been working on my first entry to the "Newer Projects" section as time permits, but time has been in short supply since I recently sorted through an old computer collection and also made a couple upgrades to my own system. Also, a friend dropped by from out of town last Friday. And I'm traveling on business two days this week and two days next. Plus the weather is finally nice again, and I get out on my bike more often...well, you get the idea. Busy.

The computer sorting is largely done now, freeing up space in the workshop once more, and I hope to resume work on my current amplifier project next weekend. Still need to spot out my power supply case for hole drilling before that can move forward. And maybe the 70s-style amplifier article will be up next week, too. Remains to bee seen.

Site updates completed

The site updates have been largely completed. Pretty much every article on the site has seen some editing for clarity or general spelling and punctuation, and a couple new images were generated.

My next goal is to create and begin adding content to the "Newer Projects" section, starting with a 1970s-style integrated amplifier that I built for my dad. This was the first project that began to show a clear transition out of the "wandering juvie" phase of my learning, in terms of things like fit, finish, and design sanity.

Sadly, the "In Progress" section has not been updated recently because I haven't been at my workbench. Buy a car with over 100,000 miles on the odometer, and the inevitable result is high-mileage maintenance. Money-wise I got a good deal, even accounting for the repairs, but the Weekend Mechanic gig really chews up time. The coming weekend isn't looking any better, albeit the Memorial Day holiday is upon us here in the US, so maybe something interesting will happen. Can always hope!

And now for something...similar

Site updates continue without any huge surprises, but two things of note are worth mentioning here. First, the Isolated Power Supply article received substantial revisions, including a helpful new diagram on the first page. If that interests you, find the article by browsing into the "Power Supplies" section.

Second, the News Archive has been established, and all News entries for January, February, and March have been archived under "1Q08". If you wish to pursue any of the past News Blog items, look for them there.

And, for those of you in the US who will be spending time with family this weekend...Happy Hallmark Holida-- err, Happy Mother's Day!

Bric-a-brac

A small in-progress update has been posted. Check out the "In Progress!" link at left to find it.

Site clean-up editing continues as inspiration permits, so many site pages will be seeing changes, both small and large, as need and clarity demand.

THIS sure took long enough: Meet the subwoofer!

Yep, it's finally here! The P68 subwoofer article is now online in the 'Early Projects' section. This was the project that got me into DIY audio in the first place, and I'm happy to say that although it has a few rough edges, it is still with us today, more than two years after it was completed.

Also, the Intro page has been given a revision that puts it more in line with the focus of the website. You either get it, or you don't. I happen to like it even though over half of it is a very old gag that I certainly didn't invent.

At this point, I think I need to go back through the website and clean up the numerous typos and grammatical errors that found their way into the articles. In Progress updates should continue as my current projects move forward, though.

Still more 'In Progress' updates (P68 article coming soon, I promise!)

It's been a long time since any work got done on the P68 subwoofer article, which ironically, is nearly completed. Unfortunately, between gainful employment and car maintenance and a few other bits of randomness, it's been a long couple weeks lately. But the subwoofer is coming soon. No, really.

Meanwhile, more work got done toward the DC bench supply, and the amplifier boards from my newest audio project now have everything installed except the output transistors. See what's been happening in my lair by clicking the "In Progress" link at left.

'In Progress' updates continue (finally)

Hoo boy...been a couple weeks. Well, I've been productive, it's just been slower due to car maintenance concerns over the past couple weekends. But, another update has been posted to "In Progress", showing both the current status of the bench power supply and the beginnings of another amplifier project. Check it out in the usual place.
