The 2011 Denver Auto Show

The 2011 Denver Auto Show was held from March 30 to April 3. The
photos shown here were taken on Saturday, April 2. The show is sponsored
regionally and does not attract any metal more glamorous than the very
newest production models and a smattering of minor tech demonstrations,
but is still quite good and features a fair number of exotics.

A new light car in the Chevy stable produces an
awkward twist of a VW Golf and a Scion xB that
ends in a snout with swine-like proportions. The
marketing representative wears her looks better than
the car, but then kills the effect with a programmed
sales pitch that runs on a continuous loop.

Some Ferrari models at the 2011 DAS were fully open
to the public for everything short of turning the key.
Naturally these did not include the 458 Italia, which
comes to life with the stunning curves and exaggerated
details of every boy dreamer's favorite Hot Wheels car.
The car is out of reach, both in financial terms and in
velvet rope terms, with standard "No Touchy" signs.

Take one of Audi's hottest rides, delete
the roof, and add a shade of bright red known
to attract every humminbird and cop within ten
miles, and what would you get? If you're lucky,
it's an R8 Spyder with styling cues that manage
to give the 458 Italia a run for its money.

New to the US market for 2011: beautiful
"gullwing" doors capture the spirit of a classic in
the Mercedes SLS AMG. The headlights may have
been lifted from a Nissan Altima, but they nicely fit
the fender profile, so there's not much to dislike.

The forever-iconic mid-1960s Ford Mustang, decked
to the gills in race trim and clear-coated within an
inch of its life, sits pretty in the company of a similarly
distinguished Jaguar E-type and a Ferrari 330 America.
Yes, please; yes, please; and yes, please.

Dangerous curves ahead? Bring it: we've got
dangerous curves right here, and a paint job that
could knock raptors out of flight in bright sun.
An artistic, split, five-spoke wheel arches spiderish
legs over a cross drilled, carbon-ceramic brake
setup that is worth more than my own daily driver.

A corner of the conventiona hall was allocated
for a selection of high-dollar project cars, such
as these race-ready Corvettes. The too-popular
polished-lip wheel gets an interesting twist with
bright yellow spokes instead of the usual black.

Another small car introduction, another hot young
marketing representative to wield the spiel. Unlike
the Chevy display, though, the goods have a rather
impressive array of after-market mods and the spiel
includes usable techincal information about the car.

Subaru addresses two key problems in the
previous-generation STi by bringing back the
four-door sedan variant, and stiffening up the
suspension with a very slight drop in the ride
height. Affordable? Hardly. But it's closer to
being attainable than, say, that Gallardo.

For 2011, Ford finally brings the Euro-spec
Focus platform into the US as a 2012 model,
  restoring the long-absent hatch/wagon styling
in the process. Large alloy rims and a somewhat
reduced tire profile complete a reasonably
  palatable compact car package.
