The Night Photography Gallery

A long exposure and a higher ISO setting combine to reveal scenes
that are invisible to the unaided eye. Not quite fun yet? Accentuate the
details with flashlights or freeze motion with a handheld speedlight.

  Alderson Hall houses the petroleum
engineering department of the Colorado School
of Mines. Studens come and go all day, but in
the late evening, a wide angle and a long
  exposure reveal the unseen details.

Hanging Lake, tucked in a high alcove,
requires a short but steep hike above Glenwood
Canyon. A clear night and accent lighting brings
out a perspective that is never seen by the
  cameras of the daytime tourists.

Full moonlight is captured in Glenwood Canyon
until, at some length, the appearance of daylight is
achieved. A handheld flashlight brings out the
  foreground shrubbery and concrete pathway.

A medical office building, under construction,
is subjected to a photographic examination of
its skeleton. Security lighting for the unfinished
structure emphasizes the future window openings
  and galvanized steel framing members.

A very wide angle, viewed at the I-70 entrance
from US-40 near Morrison Road, produces a rainbow
of colors from a mix of point sources and passing
automobiles. A flashlight illuminates the grasses.

The sky was clear, but a brisk wind and
a very dry snowfall created ideal conditions
for a mild ground blizzard. A flash assist from
the right captures snowflakes in midflight
and adds an ethereal shadow cast.

An ultrawide lens, a fast machine, and
motion blur in the clouds combine to produce
the effect of a covert street race down
the winding face of Lookout Mountain
  and adjacent Mount Zion.

The wheels of government pause for the
night. Somewhere nearby, a photographer prowls,
confident that the daytime flow of pedestrian
traffic will not be obstructing the view of the
  Jefferson County courthouse complex.

Brightly painted grain elevators, a departing
snow storm, and a nearly full moon come
together at just the right time to justify pulling
over the car for a 15-minute shoot.

The air is a crisp 25 degrees Farenheight,
and a cold moon slowly sets over the Collegiates
while the town of Buena Vista gradually lights
up below. The sun has nearly finished setting,
but a time exposure captures the lingering
glow along the edges of the range.
